Abstract | Supercritical Water Gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology for the treatment and valorization of difficult waste streams, particularly high moisture waste streams that require significant energy to dewater prior to disposal. Municipal and industrial wastewater containing organics is ideally suited for conversion using SCWG. The highly corrosive properties of supercritical water are such that breaks down organic molecules and converts them into gaseous products. The gas product of SCWG is primarily composed of hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide with minimal carbon monoxide. After separation of CO₂ which can be accomplished through staged de-pressurization of the product stream or low pressure water washing, a high value gas consisting primarily of hydrogen and methane is produced. This gas can be injected into the natural gas grid or the hydrogen separated utilizing high pressure membrane separation for a low carbon source of hydrogen energy carrier. SCWG has the added benefit of removing difficult to treat wastewater components such as endocrine disruptors and micro-plastics. |
