Abstract
The ability of coatings to protect base metals against agressive environments, particlarly those that involve mechanical attack by eroding or abrading particles, is primarily a function of their morphology (form or structure) rather than that of their composition or hardness. A process has been developed for producing coatings containing a ceramic phase finely and well dispersed in a ductile metallic matrix. The method consists in synthesizing and depositing those cermet coatings by using the plasma spray technology. The thick titanium boride-based coatings, described in this paper, are obtained by a one-step process and have a good abrasive wear resistance.
