Abstract | From the 1970s to the present time, a great deal of field work and analysis has been done on the physical and mechanical properties of sea ice ridges. Despite numerous measurements made on hundreds of ridges, knowledge gaps still remain. Ridge properties have been summarized in terms of their relevance to shipping and offshore structures. An emphasis is placed on the degree of consolidation within the ridge, which is a key factor in the determination of the exerted ice load. The amount of data published on each ridge parameter is discussed, along with the variability in measurements for various parameters, and the measurement techniques used. Geographic location is also considered; ridge properties vary with location, and some regions have few published data. |
