| Abstract | An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral-directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning manoeuvres at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency and the ratio of the roll-angle to the sideslip-angle in the Dutch roll mode, together with the damping ratio and frequency of the numerator quadratic of the roll-angle to aileron-control-input transfer function. The pilots performed a low speed, visual manoeuvring task and documented their assessment of the characteristics through extensive comments and a numerical rating. |

| Note | This report presents all the data categorized with respect to the test parameters as comprehensively as possible to allow others to examine them thoroughly from various points of view. No attempt has been made here to analyze the findings in detail. This is the subject of continuing work.
This report is based on NRC, NAE LTR-FR-12, 1969 which was prepared for the United States Air Force by the Flight Research Section, National Aeronautical Establishment, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, under the sponsorship of the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory, Research and Technology Division, Air Force Systems Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The research was conducted under Subcontract S-68-48 to the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, Inc. The CAL project engineer was Mr. C. Chalk and Mr. W. Klotzback was the project officer for the Flight Dynamics Laboratory.
Dr. K-H.Doetsch, Dr. D.G. Gould and Mr. D. M. McGregor of the Flight ResearchSection collaborated in the preparation of the simulation, the programming of the tests, and the analysis of the results. The evaluation pilots were Mr. N. Infanti of CAL; Mr. A.D. Wood, Mr. D.M. McGregor, Mr. F. Augusta of the Flight Research Section; and Mr. D. Morrison of Canadair Ltd.
The original report, which was submitted in August 1969 as NRC, NAE LTR-FR-12, 1969, for publication as AFFDL-TR-69-41, is superseded by this report. |
