Abstract	This paper describes the origins and development of the design of the most powerful escort tug in Europe, a 41 metre VSP Escort, Fire-Fighting, an Pollution Response tug for Ostensjo Rederi a.s. of Haugesund, Norway. The paper describes in detail the design investigations undertaken, and the extensive model-testing program that was commissioned both to prove the concept and to explore the impact of various design variables on the escort towing performance. Finally, the lessons learned have been applied to a new series of tug designs that offer increased performance for this emerging science of escort towing.
