Abstract | A number of fire ventilation scenarios were investigated to identify the proper ventilation scheme for conducting design fire tests in a 4.2 m long, 3.8 m wide, and 2.4 m high compartment. The work was part of the process of designing fire experiments for fires in various rooms in low-rise residential dwellings of light-frame construction to assess the ignition, growth, fully-developed, and decay stages of fire in relation to ventilation rate. The ventilation schemes were provided by using different sizes of windows, doors, or both. The fuel package used, a mock-up sofa with two wood cribs below, was based on the statistical evidence that many fatal residential fires begin with an item of upholstered furniture. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique was used to conduct the numerical investigation for the study. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), Version 5, was used to conduct the numerical simulations. The report presents the numerical predictions for different ventilation scenarios. |
