| Abstract | A technique is presented whereby the equilibrium power-speed characteristics of a VTOL lifting turbofan can be predicted from an analysis of time-speed traces recorded during power-off decelerations. Comparisons made with power characteristics deduced from thermodynamic measurements in the tip-turbine gas stream of one 3-foot diameter turbo-lifting-fan show agreement to within the reliability limits of the data. Analysis of deceleration traces from an aerodynamically similar turbo-lifting-fan of different mechanical arrangement, gave a predicted power characteristic in close agreement with that for the original rotor .
Simplicity and convenience are the primary advantages claimed for the technique presented, inasmuch as it avoids the elaborate traversing instrumentation (and consequent extensive test running) necessary to obtain accurate and reliable thermodynamic measurements. |
