| Abstract | The Division of Mechanical Engineering of the National Research Council of Canada has been actively involved in research on hospital air beds since 1974. The specifications of an air bed for Canadian use were defined in collaboration with Canadian authorities in the medical field. By 1976 an experimental air bed, the Mark I CAIRBED, was designed and built by NRC, and a program of clinical evaluations supported by NRC PILP funds was initiated in the Burns Unit of the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Kingston, Ontario under the direction of Dr. A.K. Wyllie, M.D.
Although the field trials are still continuing today, the experience obtained so far has led to new design specifications for a Mark II CAIRBED. A decision was made to have prototypes of this air bed made commercially under contract. |
