| Abstract | At the third meeting of the Subcommittee on Aircraft Skis of the Associate Committee on Aeronautical Research, it was decided that an attempt should be made to develop a streamlined ski which would have lower drag and better pitching moment characteristics than the streamlined ski N.R.L. No. 72-5.
In previous investigations the method of approach has been to take a ski which is known to have good snow characteristics and to attempt to convert it to a streamlined body without changing the ski bottom or front.
In the work described in this report the problem has been approached from another angle. Commencing with a streamlined shape that was known to have a low aerodynamic drag progressive modifications were made until a shape was arrived at that had good drag and pitching moment characteristics and at the same time showed promise of behaving satisfactorily on snow.
The recommendations given in N.R.L. Report No. MM-57 pertaining to good snow performance characteristics were followed as far as possible. |
