Abstract
Protoplasts from cell suspension cultures of soybean (Glycine max L.), Vicia hajastana Grossh., and brome grass (Bromus inermis Leyss) were isolated enzymatically, washed and cultured in liquid medium. Sorbitol, glucose, sucrose and xylose were individually tested with respect to their ability to function as osmotic stabilizers during cell wall regeneration and subsequent cell division. Sustained cell divisions were achieved in all species. Soybean and Vicia protoplasts grew more favourably in glucose than in the other compounds used as osmoticum. On the other hand, sucrose proved best for brome grass.
