Abstract | The propeller performance in uniform and non-contact blocked flow conditions was computed by a conventional propeller lifting surface theory and the results were compared with those of the experiments made in the IMD ice tank and cavitation tunnel. The comparison among the computation and the two experiments indicates the necessity of some future works both in the experiments and in the theoretical modelling. However, the computation reveals some interesting features of hydrodynamic characteristics of a propeller rotating in a flow field varying like a step function, which is peculiar in the blocked flow. Also, the future direction of theoretical/numerical modelling is discussed using a calculation on a 2-dimensional hydrofoil near a wall with the effect of foil surface boundary layer taken into account as well as the propeller lifting surface computation. |
