| Abstract | The effect of welding by submerged arc welding on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in NaOH is studied for carbon steels used as pressure vessels in the Bayer process industry. Consideration is given to the corrosion behavior of the weld metal, the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal. The electrochemical properties and hardness of each microstructure were characterized. The slow-strain-rate test has been used on welded and as-rolled specimens. The relative susceptibility of every microstructure to SCC was determined by metallographic and SEM studies. Crack measurement on sectioned weld specimens indicated the relative tendency of the five microstructures for cracking to occur. The base metal is found to be the microstructure with the highest crack velocity followed by the basaltic structure in three steels. |
