| Abstract | Evidence is presented that the angular distribution of 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulphonate (ANS) molecules in phospholipid bilayers is anisotropic, the absorption vectors being distributed between 30° and 90° to the normal to the bilayer plane. They are apparently also undergoing rapid oscillations of amplitude 55°. This behaviour is discussed with reference to fluorescence changes in natural membranes. The relative insensitivity of these and other fluorescence parameters to lipid type is discussed as a means of identifying ANS in a lipid bilayer environment. |
