Abstract
Since 2019, Toronto Transit Commission has operated one of the largest battery electric bus (BEB) trials in North America, with 60 long-range BEBs from three bus manufacturers. The trial, and the wealth of data and experience present a unique opportunity for the National Research Council of Canada, Transport Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada to partner with Toronto Transit Commission to better understand the real-world implications of integrating, operating, and maintaining BEBs for transit in a Canadian environment. The collaboration began in 2020 to advance the understanding of the technical requirements for electric buses operating in Canada, with the goal of better supporting Canadian transit agencies interested in electrifying their fleets.
