| Abstract | This report describes the concept, design and implementation of the Canadian Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (CA QWIP) experiment on UK STRV 1D satellite. The objective of the experiment was to check the performance and verify the effect of nuclear radiation in the space environment on Quantum Well Infrared Photodetctors (QWIP), Quantum Well Light Emitting Diode (QW LED) and QWIP/LED integrated devices designed and fabricated at the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada. The experiment was launched successfully on the STRV 1D satellite in November 2000. The CA QWIP experiment operated well in space initially soon after launch. Since then, the satellite itself has suffered a system failure that is not related to the CA QWIP experiment. This failure has prevented any communication from all experiments on the STRV 1C and 1D satellites from various countries including UK, Canada and the US. |
