| Abstract | Powerplant system weights are investigated for VTOL schemes using wing-immersed fans for hovering and jet propulsion for cruising; the powerplant system weights are composed of four items, viz., gas generators, fans, hovering fuel and cruising fuel. Geared turbine, tip turbine, and tipjet drives are considered for the fans, and single-stream, mixed-stream end dual-stream cycles are considered for the gas generators.
It is demonstrated that tip turbine drives produce the lowest powerplant system weights of the three types of drive, and that hot single-stream or heated dual-stream cycles should be used with them. The minimum achievable powerplant system weight appears to be about forty percent of the all-up weight of the aircraft. |
