Abstract | This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the state of stress in oil under either the wheel or the track of a moving vehicle, based upon accepted theories of Soil Mechanics (which are first summarized for convenience). The paper represents a continuation of the work described in Technical Memorandum No. 2 which was concerned primarily with the stresses in soil 'enclosed by' a track shoe and grouser. The stability of a single wheel or a single track show with or without grouser is alone considered. Experimental verification of the theory is presented, based on the use of dry sand as the soil medium. Future papers will deal with the extension of the work to the case of several wheels or shoes, with experimental results for other types of soil. |
