Abstract
Calculated performance and weight data are presented for a category of VTOL powerplants in which highly loaded fans (500 lb. /ft?), immersed in the wings, * are used to augment the hovering thrust of conventional turbojet engines. The augmentation ratio, shown to be of the order of 3.5, implies a satisfactory matching of the cruising and hovering capabilities of the powerplant for high-altitude flight, 4 but a surplus of cruising thrust is produced for short low-altitude missions. Operation with oversize propelling nozzles in the cruising configuration appears to offer a modest improvement in the fuel consumption at the expense of generally unneeded available thrust. The computed weights indicate the desirability of employing several small fans and gas generators rather than one or two large ones.
