Abstract
This paper reviews fundamental studies on the forming of semi-solid metals, and applications of the findings to the development of improved processes are presented. Uniaxial compression, closed die deformation and extrusion tests on the ZA-27 alloy were performed at various temperatures ranging from 350 to 445°C. Experimental results were discussed in regard to the initial microstructure of the metals before deformation, i.e. the conventional dendritic structure versus the non-denritic structure comprised of solid spheroids dispersed in the remaining liquid obtained through stir-cast techniques. The relationships between flow stress and solid fraction were obtained and the role of the liquidus component in deformation behavior was clarified.
