Abstract | At low outside air temperatures when a heat pump can no longer provide all of a building's heating requirements, a heat pump-oil furnace system will operate in one of two ways. Either the furnace will take over completely or the heat pump and furnace will share the task. The mode of operation affects the relationship between the amounts of oil and electricity used. This note provides the homeowner with a simple means of estimating oil and electricity consumption resulting from the addition of an add-on heat pump to an existing oil furnace. |
