Abstract
The acoustic emission associated with stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) of 2024-T351 aluminium alloy for SL and ST orientations in 3% NaCl solution was studied, in parallel with measurements of SCC velocities. The log velocity vs stress intensity, K, curves showed stage I and stage II (plateau) behaviour. The acoustic emission rate normalized per unit of crack advance was similar for both SL and ST orientations and was constant until K values ≃1.8 times the value at which stage II started. The subsequent increase in normalized emission rate coincided with a significant increase in the amount of crack surface produced per unit of crack advance. The present results indicate that the same cracking mechanisms operate during stages I and II. The signatures of the acoustic signals recorded employing a resonant transducer during corrosion and during SCC appeared identical, suggesting that similar acoustic emission sources may be responsible.
