Abstract | In the past, structure and vessel mooring systems have been modelled using mechanical methods, namely simple coil springs. The stiffness of the mooring systems could only be adjusted by replacing or combining springs with different spring constants. A new system has been developed at the Institute for Marine Dynamics, based on servo-controlled 'constant tension' (or force-controlled) winch, which will replace the mechanical springs. Utilizing position and velocity as an additional feedback, the system can be used to emulate the simple mechanical spring. More complex systems can be achieved by including non-linear spring constants, positive and negative damping, and the ability to change these system constants 'on-the-fly'. |
