Abstract | An investigation has been carried out of the influence of iron on the tensile properties and fracture behavior of a series of Al-Cu 206 cast alloys. Iron contents are explored from 0.15 to 0.5 wt pct, and at two levels of silicon and manganese. The types, morphologies and quantities of the various iron-rich intermetallics are characterized metallographically, and their effects on the tensile properties and the nucleation and growth of cracks during tensile deformation are studied. In addition, oxide films are shown to play an important role in both the nucleation of the iron-rich intermetallics and the formation of tensile cracks. |
