Abstract | Extensive test results reveal that during a rapid indentation of a hard solid on ice, a layer of pulverised ice is formed between the solid surface of indentor and the rupture surface of the ice. A time=dependent mathematical model of this layer based on the Navier-Stokes equation is presented in this paper. The pressure distribution may be conceived as a potential field produced by the so-called indentation source. Strength and distribution of this indentation source are to be determined from the solution of a transport equation in connection with a kinematic condition on the contact surface of the moving indentor. |
