Abstract
A discrete model for the plane deformation of ice grain assemblies has been developed. Each grain has anisotropic creep and elastic properties, and is represented using finite elements. Grain boundaries are modelled using joint elements which are permitted to fracture and transfer frictional forces. Examples are shown to illustrate grain boundary stress distributions, microcracking patterns and stress-strain behaviour.
