Abstract | Previous work has presented a view planning concept for automated object reconstruction. The multi-stage concept comprises a rapid initial exploration stage to produce a low resolution approximate object model - the rough model. With the rough model as the new knowledge base, a view plan is developed for a subsequent precision measurement stage capturing detailed object geometry in accordance with a pre-defined model specification. This paper addresses the issue - 'How rough can the rough model be for effective view planning?'. We present experimental results showing that good results are achievable for a reasonable level of rough model decimation, surface errors well within expected levels and sparse sampling of viewpoint space. |
