Abstract
Experimental studies of laminar flow instability between a heated horizontal cylinder and an adiabatic ceiling have identified the formation of axially periodic convection patterns in the gap region for gap-to-cylinder-diameter ratios 0.1 ≤ h/d ≤ 0.5 and Rayleigh numbers Ra ≳ 2 × 10⁶. Computations for a uniformly heated cylinder wall and for h/d = 0.2 show that, in the range 3 × 10⁶ ≲ Ra ≲ 5 × 10⁶, two pairs of steady roller-type vortices appeared in the gap region, whereas, for Ra ≳ 1 × 10⁷, the rollers broke down to quasi-steady, axially periodic, toroidal convection cells.
