Abstract
Optical inspection techniques are a particularly promising approach to on-line sensing for industrial quality and process control because of their noncontact and rapid-scanning properties. Recent technological advances in video and optical communication technology have spurred the development of rugged, compact and inexpensive optical components which are particularly suited to operation in hostile industrial environments. In this paper a number of optical sensors developed at our institute in the above fields is described and the technical considerations related to their applicability in the industrial environment will be discussed. Particular emphasis is given to on-line roughness monitoring and to polymeric material analysis by spectroscopic and light-scattering methods.
