Abstract	The error due to edge effects of the guarded-hot-plate apparatus has limited the thickness of specimens that may be tested to approximately one third the dimension of the central section of the heating unit. Samples of known conductivity were tested using various thicknesses of edge insulation and various ambient temperatures. It was found possible to determine the optimum edge conditions so that errors due to edge effects are negligible for very thick specimens.
