| Abstract | Add-on devices which purport to give continuous, automatic wheel balancing for automobiles have appeared in various forms on the consumer market during the past few years. The Division of Mechanical Engineering of the National Research Council of Canada has tested three different versions of this type of commercial product, see References 1 to 3. One of these devices, the so-called "Road Hugger", has recently been changed by the manufacturer in one significant aspect. A pair of Road Huggers of the most recent design was sent to NRC by the Province of Alberta, Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. (These two devices were labelled 79-2-13 for identification purposes.) One of the devices was weighed, measured and cut open to compare it with the model previously manufactured and reported upon in Reference 3. The other half of the pair was used to conduct the performance evaluation reported herein. The physical characteristics of the old and new model Road Huggers are compared in Appendix A. |
