Abstract
The design and performance of the national standards of time and frequency are outlined for countries which maintain primary cesium beam devices. Typical accuracies now attainable are of the order of 10⁻¹³, and new developments may improve these significantly within the next few years. Current work is directed toward optical pumping techniques of state selection and to studies of different atoms as the atomic reference.
