| Abstract | The possibility of constructing K-band local oscillators in Canada was first discussed with Dr. Roaf of Oxford during a visit to the Radiation Laboratory, M.I.T., early in February, 1944 when Dr. Roaf was also visiting there. Dr. Roaf visited Ottawa February 19, 1944, and discussed in more detail the procedures followed in making the local oscillator he and his co-workers had developed at Oxford. At that time the supply of K-band sources for experimental work was very short, and it was decided to construct a few for K-band measurements and as part of the development of the K-band set for the British Admiralty. A contributing factor to this decision was the prospect that the supply of these tubes from the U.S. might not be adequate for some time, and solving the problems of making them on an experimental scale would facilitate their production in Canada if that proved desirable. In addition it would mean the assembly of equipment which would be valuable in further experimental work on tubes.
In the present report a rather detailed description is given of the technique used in making this tube at N.R.C., as this is the first venture of the kind here, and the wartime personnel involved may not be available if and when further work of the kind is contemplated. In general the methods used follow those devised at Oxford except that the disc seals are made by an eddy current heater.
