Abstract | According to the rainscreen principle, the first line of defence minimizes rainwater passage toward a wall, while the second line deals with water that gets past the first. The design characteristics of both lines of defence must take into account the given environmental conditions. For the first line of defence that means reducing the moisture loads, having a watertight facade, and managing the forces (gravity, capillarity, etc.) that drive water through possible holes in the cladding. For the second line of defence, it means intercepting free and bound water and dissipating it. |
