Abstract	This research investigated North American requirements for smoke alarm locations intended to avoid dead air spaces. Tests were conducted in a residential dwelling and a laboratory room to examine the effect of dead air space on smoke-alarm response. Small and slow-growing, smouldering and flaming fire sources were used to challenge the smoke alarms. Emphasis was placed on the ability of the alarms to detect early when fires are still small and smoke generation is still low.
