| Abstract | This report describes the results of aerodynamic and acoustic tests conducted on a 15 horsepower commercial blower by replacing the original volute casing with a larger collector to increase the distance between the cut off edge and the impeller blade tip. While there was little change in the aerodynamic performance of the blower, there were significant reductions in noise levels. The reduction in the blade passing frequency tone changed with flow conditions, from no change at the flow condition corresponding to the minimum noise level to a maximum of 15 dB at extreme flow conditions. The second and third harmonic tones of the blade passing frequency tones were completely eliminated from the spectra. There were also 5-10 dB reductions in the broad band noise levels. |
